Former Fitzgerald star Lecitus Smith selected in NFL Draft

May 2—LAS VEGAS — A former Fitzgerald High Purple Hurricane has a new destination. Lecitus Smith was picked in the National Football League Draft Saturday.

Smith was selected in the sixth round by the Arizona Cardinals out of Virginia Tech as an offensive guard. He had been projected as a late round pick.

As a Hokie, Smith was an honorable mention selection of the official All-ACC team in 2020 and 2019. He was invited to this year's Reese's Senior Bowl.

Smith primarily played tight end for Fitzgerald under former head coach Jason Strickland. He was a first team All-State selection by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2015 and 2016. In both seasons, the Purple Hurricane reached the Class AA finals

His Virginia Tech biography notes he earned a degree in consumer studies in 2021.

Smith is only the second Purple Hurricane to ever be drafted, according to Pro Football Reference. Jemea Thomas was picked by the New England Patriots in the sixth round in 2014.

Should he played in an NFL game, Smith will be the third Fitzgerald High player to do so. Besides Thomas, Victor Perry played a single game in 1987.
