Former Gopher Marion Barber III’s death was from heat stroke, officials said

The passing of Marion Barber III received some closure Monday.

The former Gophers running back’s cause of death on June 1 was determined to be heat stroke and its manner was deemed an accident, the Collin County (Texas) Medical Examiner told the Pioneer Press on Monday.

The Barber family, per Marion’s request, did not seek a full autopsy nor an assessment of his brain for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the condition associated with repeated concussions in the sport.

Barber was found unresponsive near a running shower when Frisco, Texas police conducted a welfare check at his apartment last month.

Barber, who was buried before his celebration of life June 22, rushed for 3,276 yards and 35 touchdowns at Minnesota from 2001-04. The Plymouth, Minn., native and Wayzata High School graduate then ran for 4,780 yards and 53 touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears from 2005-11.
