Former Gov. John Y. Brown Jr., who died this month at age 88, lay in state Tuesday at the Kentucky Capitol, where members of the public could come to pay their respects to the late statesman.

Brown was a multimillionaire known for, among other things, his stint running Kentucky Fried Chicken in the 1960s and for his successful, upstart bid for governor in 1979, which was supported by the star power of his wife at the time, former Miss America and sportscaster Phyllis George.

A private memorial service will be held at the Capitol on Wednesday, starting at 2 p.m. eastern time. The building will be closed to the public starting at 11 a.m., but people can watch the service live on television via KET and online at KET.org/Live.
