1976 graduate returns as Southern Door School District interim superintendent
Southern Door School District's new interim superintendent is a graduate of the district.
Tony Klaubauf, a 1976 graduate of the high school, was announced Monday as the interim leader.
Klaubauf previously was the superintendent of the Denmark School District for 11 years before he retired in October 2018.
“I had settled on the retirement life, but the opportunity to help Southern Door School District to continue to excel in academic achievement and student growth was enough to get me excited again," Klaubauf said in a statement released by the school district. "I read this summer that if a person wants to stay young, stay around young people. Since all the employees and students will be younger than me, this shouldn’t be a problem!”
Klaubauf will succeed Chris Peterson, who resigned as the superintendent effective June 30 after being placed on administrative leave in mid-March by the board for unspecified reasons. Peterson was in his second year with Southern Door.
Klaubauf has been a teacher in Stockbridge, Hillsboro and Waupun, and served several positions in Mishicot – elementary principal, curriculum coordinator and superintendent.
After retirement, Klaubauf served as co-executive director for the Association for Equity in Funding, a group that advocates for equitable funding for public school students across Wisconsin.
In 2019, Klaubauf was named to the Southern Door Alumni Hall of Fame.
He and his wife, Janet, have two boys, Collin and Ben, who are both students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
