Former Herald-Tribune opinion editor joins Selby Foundation's board of directors

Tom Tryon, the former opinion editor and public engagement leader for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, has joined the board of directors of the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, the private foundation announced.

“The board is thrilled to welcome Tom Tryon to our team," Selby Foundation Board Chair Barbara Zdravecky said. "Tom’s vast experience – from his boyhood in Palmetto through his many years of leading the editorial policy at the Herald – will be instrumental in cementing our work in the four-county area of Selby’s philanthropic focus.”

Born and raised in Manatee County, Tryon is a member of Christ Episcopal Church and also serves on the board of Second Heart Homes, which houses and provides care for mentally ill homeless people. His past leadership includes serving as chairman of Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence and Youth Leadership Sarasota County.

Tryon currently leads The Patterson Foundation’s Higher Waters: Suncoast Quality of Life initiative. He and his wife, Yvonne, reside in Ellenton.

Tryon joins current board members Zdravecky; E. Keith DuBose, vice chair; Carolyn Johnson, secretary/treasurer; Cathy Layton, immediate past chair; and Susan Hines.

The Selby Foundation, founded by William G. and Marie Selby in 1955, supports Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and DeSoto counties through capital grants and scholarships. Since its establishment, the Selby Foundation has provided more than $120 million to the community.
