Former Kansas Jayhawks basketball guard Joseph Yesufu announces transfer spot

Former Kansas guard Joseph Yesufu, who entered the NCAA transfer portal on March 23, has decided to continue his college basketball career at Washington State.

He made an announcement Thursday on his Instagram account and Joe Tipton’s On3sports.com account on Twitter.

Yesufu, 6-0, 180 pounds from Bolingbrook, Illinois, played two seasons at Drake before joining KU’s program for the 2021-22 season. According to Portal Report, he also heard from coaches from Stanford, USC, Purdue, SMU, Boise State, Drake and others.

This past season as a junior he averaged 4.1 points a game while logging 12.7 minutes per game in 35 contests. Yesufu hit 24 of 84 threes for 28.6%. Overall he hit 36.7% of his shots. He had 15 assists to 18 turnovers with 16 steals.

Washington State, a team coached by Kyle Smith, went 17-7 last season.

“Yesufu is similar, in some ways, to last year’s transfer portal grab Justin Powell (formerly of Tennessee),” wrote Nate Dahl and Bryce Hendricks of cougcenter.com. “Much like Powell, Yesufu played limited minutes in a bigger conference but has upside just because they were good enough to play in those conferences in the first place.

“The upside for the Cougs is that maybe Yesufu could recapture the magic from the final stretch of his sophomore season, the one that got him to Kansas in the first place. Even doing that sophomore season, he did not play in over 25 minutes in a game until February 7th, but by the end of February, he started to go on an absolute tear that made him look like a potential superstar. If he can find that rhythm again in Pullman, then this will be another great portal grab for Smith and staff.”

Other players from the 2022-23 KU team to play for new schools next year include Bobby Pettiford (East Carolina), Cam Martin (Boise State), MJ Rice (North Carolina State) and Zach Clemence (undecided).

KU has received a commitment from one player in the portal thus far: Nick Timberlake of Towson.
