Former Kingfisher and OU guard Bijan Cortes commits to Wichita State

Bijan Cortes is headed to Wichita State.

The 6-foot-3 guard and former Kingfisher standout announced his commitment to the Shockers on Sunday.

Cortes played at OU during his first two years in college. He averaged 3.2 points, two assists and 1.6 rebounds in 17.2 minutes per game this past season.

Cortes was a four-star prospect out of high school, according to ESPN. He led Kingfisher to state titles in 2019 and 2021.

After averaging two points per game as a freshman, he got slightly more playing time as a sophomore.

He announced on March 22 he was entering the transfer portal.

Hachimura leads Lakers past Grizzlies in Game 1

Rui Hachimura had a career-best playoff scoring performance with 29 points, including 21 in the second half, and LeBron James added 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 128-112 on Sunday in the opening game of their Western Conference playoff series in Memphis, Tennessee.

Former OU standout Austin Reaves added 23 points, including nine straight in the closing minutes as the Lakers pulled away. Anthony Davis had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and D’Angelo Russell, who scored only two points in the Lakers’ play-in win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, finished with 19 points.

Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 31 points, while Desmond Bane scored 22. Ja Morant had 18 points before leaving in the fourth quarter with an injured right hand.

Late Saturday: The New York Knicks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-97 in Cleveland in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference playoff playoff series. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 27 points, and Julius Randle had 19. Donovan Mitchell had 38 for Cleveland. … The Sacramento Kings defeated the Golden State Warriors 126-123 in Sacramento in Game 1 of their Western Conference playoff series. De’Aaron Fox led Sacramento with 38 points.

Oklahoma State baseball: The 14th-ranked Cowboys scored six runs in the eighth inning as they rallied past No. 25 West Virginia for an 11-6 win Sunday at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater. The victory snapped OSU’s five-game losing streak. Tyler Wulfert had a 4-for-5 performance at the plate for the Cowboys. Marcus Brown hit a three-run homer, and Roc Riggio went 3 for 5 and hit his team-high 11th home run. Chase Adkison also homered.

OU baseball: The Sooners beat Texas Tech 12-2 Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman in the series finale. After Texas Tech won the first two games in the series, OU bounced back as it was led by a stellar performance from former Blachard standout Bryce Madron, who went 4 for 5 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI. Braden Carmichael improved to 2-0 on the mound after tossing 7 ⅓ innings. He allowed just one earned run and nine hits.

OU men’s gymnastics: The Sooners placed fourth at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in University Park, Pennsylvania. OU had a team score of 414.024, finishing behind Stanford (422.458), Michigan (419.889) and Illinois (415.590). Four Sooners earned All-America status. Junior Zach Nunez placed second on pommel horse (14.333), freshman Ignacio Yockers was third on horse (14.266), sophomore Emre Dodanli was fourth on floor exercise (14.733) and senior Jack Freeman was seventh on horizontal bar (13.900).

OU women’s tennis: The Sooners beat Kansas 4-2 Sunday in Lawrence, Kansas, as they earned a share of the Big 12 regular season championship with Texas. OU has now claimed back-to-back regular season conference titles.

OU softball: The top-ranked Sooners picked up two victories Saturday at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, beating Louisville 10-1 in five innings and tournament host Miami (Ohio) 13-1 in six innings. Haley Lee and Cydney Sanders each homered against Louisville. Tiare Jennings, Sophia Nugent, Kinzie Hansen and Alynah Torres homered in the other game.
