Former KU wing Kelly Oubre Jr. of 76ers released from hospital after being hit by car

Former University of Kansas men’s basketball player Kelly Oubre Jr., now with the NBA’s 76ers, has been released from a hospital in Philadelphia, where he was treated for injuries Saturday night after being hit by a car near his home in Center City, ESPN.com has reported.

The 27-year-old Oubre, who is in his first year with the Sixers, sustained fractured ribs as well as bruises and cuts to his body, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.

Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote on social media site X: “According to the incident report, Kelly Oubre Jr. was struck in the upper chest area with a Silver vehicle’s driver-side mirror. The car then fled the scene, according to the incident report. The report adds that PFD Medics responded to the scene and transported Oubre to Jefferson Hospital in stable condition. In addition to a broken rib, the incident report said he suffered injuries to his hip and right leg.”

Philadelphia Police told The Associated Press in an email that Oubre was struck at about 7 p.m. while crossing the roadway at Broad and Locust streets in Center City. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital. Police told the AP there is an active investigation into the incident.

A team source told ESPN.com Oubre will “miss a significant amount of playing time, but not the rest of the season.” A team official also told AP that Oubre was not expected to miss the rest of the 2023-24 season.

ESPN added that Oubre will work closely with the 76ers medical staff on treatment and care and be re-evaluated in a week.

Oubre, who played for Charlotte last season, signed a one-yeal deal with the Sixers in September. A starter, he is averaging 16.3 points per game on 50% shooting.
