The building which was once home to the well-known Five Points bar Pavlov’s could become a liquor store.

The city of Columbia’s board of zoning appeals is set to consider an item that would make way for a liquor store at 2000-B Greene St. in Five Points. Applicant James Bigby said in the zoning application that the retail liquor store would be called Tilly’s Warehouse.

The zoning board meets at 4 p.m. June 1 at Columbia City Hall.

The building in question, which is in the back of a property that also includes the Salty Nut Cafe, once was home to Pavlov’s, which was long a popular haunt for University of South Carolina students. However, Pavlov’s — known simply as Pav’s to its fans — closed in 2021 after battles with the state Department of Revenue over its alcohol licenses and pressure from neighbors who were fed up with alleged rowdy behavior in late-night Five Points bars.

Now, nearly two years later, the city’s zoning board will decide whether to allow for a special exception for the proposed liquor store there.

City paperwork indicates there will be remodeling work to the interior and exterior of the 4,200-square-foot building, including repainting the building, putting in new awnings, installing a glass entryway door, installing a loading door on the side of the building for inventory, removing a wooden deck to make way for parking spaces, and sealing and restriping the existing parking lot.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to provide input on the Tilly’s Warehouse liquor store request at the June 1 zoning board meeting. One email from a concerned resident was attached to the city’s agenda paperwork for the meeting, with that resident largely expressing various concerns about traffic that could come with the business.
