CHICAGO, Ill. (NEXSTAR) – Tim Mapes, the long-time chief of staff for former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for perjury and obstructing justice Monday.

A federal jury found Mapes guilty last year of trying to obstruct the federal investigation into Madigan’s operation at the Capitol.

Mapes served as Madigan’s chief of staff for 25 years. He also served as the Executive Director of the Illinois Democratic Party for 20 years while Madigan chaired the party.

House Republicans applauded the sentence, but are asking for laws to hold more politicians accountable for their ethics.

“We sound like a broken record with our continuous calls for ethics reform, but we will not stop until it is passed: we cannot continue to rely on federal prosecution to hold elected officials to a higher standard,” House Republican Leader Rep. Tony McCombie (R-Savana) said.

Madigan’s own criminal trial is scheduled to start his trial later this year.
