Former Montgomery County high school track coach sentenced for sex abuse of student

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A former high school coach was sentenced Wednesday for sexually abusing a girl while she was one of his athletes.

Giovanni Reumante, 34, of Takoma Park, was sentenced to five years, four of which were suspended, meaning he will serve one year in prison, followed by three years of supervised probation. He will also be registered as a sex offender for life.

Reumante pleaded guilty to sex abuse of a minor on Nov. 1, 2022. For years since 2013, he worked as a track and field coach at Northwood High School in Silver Spring. His victim came forward as an adult – she was one of his athletes between 2014 and 2017.

According to the District Court of Maryland, the victim started track as a sophomore when she was 15 years old. At the time, Reumante was an assistant coach, in charge of developing and overseeing the team’s workout.

The girl texted Reumante to ask him a question about track, but they began a conversation and he became flirtatious. He told her that she was very beautiful and that he was going to marry her, according to the court.

These conversations happened multiple times a day on a daily basis.

The victim said they had their first kiss on school premises after he asked her to meet him during the concession stand. He had keys to the stand and they went inside where they kissed and he began to touch her body. At the time, she was 16 years old.

Their relationship progressed while in school and practice and she would meet Reumante in the school neighborhood to avoid anyone seeing her getting into his car.

The two started having sex right after she turned 17 years old.

Reumante was arrested on Dec. 29, 2021. He also worked as a paraeducator at the school.
