Former Nashville police officer convicted in fatal 2018 shooting released from jail

Former Nashville police officer Andrew Delke, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter after fatally shooting a man in 2018, was released from jail today, his lawyer confirmed.

Delke, 29, who is white, shot Daniel Hambrick, 25, who was Black, in the back three times as he ran away after a North Nashville traffic stop on July 26, 2018. The shooting spurred on conversation about policing and racial bias in Nashville.

"He appreciates the strong support he received from the Fraternal Order of Police and many citizens," Delke's lawyer, David Raybin, told The Tennessean in a text message Thursday.

Delke was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting. Under the terms of the plea agreement, he was sentenced to three years in prison in July 2021. He served his sentence in Nashville in a facility run by the Davidson County Sherriff's Office. The deal allowed Delke to be released in less time with standard jail credits.

Delke's release date was previously set for Dec. 3. Raybin maintained that Delke was released Thursday due to earning jail credits. Delke received monthly program and behavior credits, DCSO spokesperson Jon Adams told The Tennessean Thursday. All eligible felons sentenced by the state can earn credits, Adams said.
