Former Navy SEAL killed in action in Ukraine

Swift was a Navy Special Warfare Operator First Class and fought in a unit with the Ukrainian military. According to the Navy official, Swift died as a result of being wounded during an attack by Russian troops in eastern Ukraine.

"We can confirm the recent death of a U.S. citizen fighting in Ukraine," the State Department stated, though they did not name Swift explicitly.

“We are in touch with his family and providing all possible consular assistance. Out of respect for the privacy of the family during this difficult time, we have nothing further to add.”

Daniel Swift was originally from Oregon. He joined the U.S. Navy in 2005, and in 2006 completed training in the Navy SEAL program, CNN reported. He took a break from service from early 2014 to late 2015. Swift's last duty station was a special warfare unit on the West Coast. It is not known why and how long Swift fought in Ukraine.
