Former NBA player Chris Herren to share his addiction story Oct. 19 in Richmond

RICHMOND, Ind. — Former NBA player Chris Herren will share his story of addiction Oct. 19 in Richmond.

The free program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 6000 National Road E., is sponsored by Meridian Health Services as part of its Speaker Series. It includes a complimentary lunch, according to a news release.

Reservation deadline is Oct. 10. Reservations may be made online at www.meridianhs.org/events/speaker-series/2022-chris-herren-richmond.

Herren played at Boston College and Fresno State before reaching the NBA, playing for his hometown Boston Celtics. He also spent seven seasons playing overseas before losing it all to addiction.

His recovery has been documented in his “Basketball Junkie” memoir, in the Emmy-nominated ESPN Films documentary “Unguarded” and in media stories.

Following his presentation, a local panel will discuss issues related to substance use, recovery and ideas for local solutions. The panel will include Sheriff Randy Retter, Richmond Community Schools Superintendent Curtis Wright and State Rep. Brad Barrett.

Meridian's Speaker Series previously brought former NFL player Ryan Leaf to Richmond.
