Former Netcong fire captain gets 3 years for child porn charges

A former Netcong volunteer fire captain was sentenced to three years in prison for distributing child pornography.

In April, James Hess, of the Landing section of Mount Arlington, pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child in connection with distributing child sexual abuse material, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.

Hess will have to register as a sex offender under Megan's Law when he is released from prison.

Hess was accused of uploading child sexual abuse material while at Netcong Fire Company 1. When he was arrested in December, the prosecutor's office said Hess uploaded video files and viewed child pornography using Kik, a messaging social media platform.

He was arrested after someone gave the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children a CyberTip, referencing Hess uploading the video files that allegedly showed the sexual abuse of minors.

Hess worked for the New Jersey Firemen's Home at the historic Lathrop Estates in Boonton, which provides long-term and residential health care services to paid or volunteer firefighters in the state. Messages left with NJ Firemen's Home and with the Netcong Fire Department were not immediately returned.
