Former North Haledon EMT building for sale after owner scraps plan for apartments

NORTH HALEDON — The old ambulance corps headquarters that was auctioned off a year and a half ago is once again on the market.

The asking price for the 3,670-square-foot building at 792 Belmont Ave. is $599,000, or $235,450 more than the amount paid for it in December 2020.

Officials decided to sell the building at the time because the ambulance corps could not find enough trained EMTs to stay viable, and the borough turned over emergency calls to the Paterson Fire Department.

The one-story building, with three garage bays, had been a firehouse for many decades.

Zvonko Veskov of Wyckoff, a real estate agent who won the public bidding, has it listed on the website of his Garfield-based brokerage, New Jersey Homes and Estates.

But tax records show that Veskov no longer owns the property — he sold it in September to a Nutley-based limited liability company.

The new owner was scheduled to appear in front of the Zoning Board of Adjustment to present a plan for a four-unit apartment building. It called for the construction of a second floor, an addition of 2,265 square feet.

However, the applicant withdrew the plan before the initial hearing on April 7. It needed a use variance because the property is zoned only for one-family residences.

Michael Kauker, the zoning board's planner, had issued a memo to its members that said the undersized tract of less than three-tenths of an acre is "not particularly well-suited" for the proposed use.

He suggested that it be redeveloped for a single-family dwelling of 5,000 square feet.
