Former Ohio State football RB Trey Sermon claimed by Philadelphia Eagles

Trey Sermon is heading to Philadelphia.

Less than a day after the San Francisco 49ers waived the former Ohio State running back, Sermon was claimed by the Eagles ahead of the first week of the NFL season Thursday.

"Trey’s come a long way here this year," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. "And he’s someone we can count on and it’s not just him, it’s the whole group. So all these guys I think are good enough to help us. We just have to figure out which direction we’re going to go.”

Sermon played one season for the Buckeyes after transferring to the Buckeyes from Oklahoma. In 2020, he recorded 870 rushing yards on 116 carries with four touchdowns, averaging a career-high 7.5 yards per carry.

Sermon was selected with the No. 88 pick by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL draft. He played in nine games during his rookie season, including two starts, recording 167 rushing yards and a touchdown on 41 carries, averaging 4.1 yards per touch.

Sermon joins an Eagles running back room that includes former Penn State running back Miles Sanders, along with Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott.
