Cardale Jones is giving pro football another shot.

The Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League signed former Ohio State quarterback who led the Buckeyes to the 2014 College Football Playoff championship.

The Elks also announced that Jones' OSU teammate, J.T. Barrett, was transferred to the retired list. Barrett was OSU's starting quarterback in 2014 before he broke his ankle against Michigan, causing Jones to get his chance.

Jones and Barrett competed for the quarterback job in 2015. Jones opened the season as the starter, but Barrett eventually took over.

Jones threw for 2,323 yards and 15 touchdowns with seven interceptions in his Buckeye career.

He was a fourth-round NFL draft pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2016. He played in only one game for the Bills, the season finale in his rookie year. He completed 6 of 11 passes for 96 yards with an interception.

Buffalo traded Jones to the Los Angeles Chargers, who released him in 2019. Jones was briefly on the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad. He played five games for the XFL's DC Defenders in 2020.

In April, Jones, 29, helped establish The Foundation, a charitable organization that provides direct financial support via name, image and likeness to OSU players.

The Elks said Barrett sustained an injury in late March that was determined to be a season-ending one. Barrett signed with Edmonton in January.
