Former University of Oregon football teammates, NFL Pro Bowlers and UO Athletics Hall of Fame members Dave Wilcox and Bob Berry died Wednesday.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the death of Wilcox, who was 80.

Oregon announced the death of Berry, who was 81.

A cause of death wasn’t given for either.

Wilcox played two years (1962-63) at Oregon before going on to a Hall of Fame career with the San Francisco 49ers where he built a reputation as a feared and durable linebacker.

In 11 NFL seasons, Wilcox made the Pro Bowl seven times, was named first-team all-Pro in 1971 and 1972 and only missed one game in his career.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

“While Dave Wilcox was nicknamed ‘The Intimidator’ for his aggressive style of play, he was a kind, humble and gracious man in all other aspects of life,” Hall of Fame president Jim Porter said in a statement. “He transformed the outside linebacker position — one of the many feats that earned him a forever home in Canton.”

Raised in Ontario, Wilcox was a standout athlete at Vale Union High School and was a member of two state championship football teams.

He started his collegiate career at Boise Junior College before transferring to Oregon.

He was a two-way lineman on the 1963 team that went 8-3 and beat SMU in the Sun Bowl. He played defensive end and also helped protect Berry as an offensive guard.

Wilcox was selected in the third round of the 1964 NFL draft by the 49ers and the Houston Oilers of the AFL.

His sons, Justin and Josh, also played for Oregon. Justin Wilcox is the coach of the California Golden Bears football team.

He entered the Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.

Berry played quarterback for the Ducks from 1962-64 and was 21-6-1 as the starter. He was the first Oregon quarterback to throw for over 1,000 yards in two different seasons and he finished his career with 4,267 passing yards and 39 touchdowns.

In 1964 he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 11th round of the NFL draft as well as by the Denver Broncos in the 26th round of the AFL draft.

He chose instead to play his senior season at Oregon and started his NFL career a year later when his draft rights were traded to the Minnesota Vikings.

Berry spent three seasons with the Vikings then went to the Atlanta Falcons where he started 51 games over five seasons, threw for 8,489 yards and 57 touchdowns, and was a Pro Bowler in 1969. He returned to the Vikings in 1973 and spent four more seasons in Minnesota and was on three Super Bowl teams.

Berry was among the inaugural class of the Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.
