The former president of the Maldives was injured in an explosion as he was entering his car in the capital city: reports

Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed was injured in an explosion in Malé, Maldives police said on Thursday.

Police said Nasheed, who is now the Speaker of the People's Majlis, is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Local media, translated by Reuters reporter Mohamed Junayd, said that Nasheed was entering his car when the explosion occurred.

"Police are currently active on the scene and we urge the public to refrain from going to that area for the time being," Maldives Police said on Twitter. "We will keep updating the public."
