Former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has shared photos of a dog he adopted from the city of Kherson in June, on Instagram on Oct. 30.

The dog — named Kherson in honor of the city he was from — was found in a shelter following the flooding of the city, after Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka Dam on June 6.

During the war, the dog Kherson experienced the loss of his home and the death of his owner. Poroshenko and his wife discovered the dog in a shelter where they had brought humanitarian aid. Kherson now lives in Kyiv.

“He's always running around, sniffing something. He's the best dog in the world. He's so smart, it's scary.”
