Former rugby star found dead a year after he vanished, West Virginia police say

A former rugby champion from England was found dead in West Virginia a year after he went missing, police said.

Bryn Hargreaves went missing from his West Virginia home on Jan. 16, 2022, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.

On Feb. 26, more than a year later, officials found human remains near Hargreaves’ home. The remains were positively identified as Hargreaves by the West Virginia state medical examiner’s office, the sheriff’s office announced on March 20.

Hargreaves played with the Wigan Warriors for two years and spent four seasons with St. Helen’s, where he was a World Club Challenge winner in 2007 and a 2008 Challenge Cup winner, the BBC reported.

“Wigan Warriors are saddened to learn of the passing of former player, Bryn Hargreaves,” his former team wrote on Facebook. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Hargreaves, who was 37, eventually moved to West Virginia after coming to the United States roughly a decade ago following his rugby career, the Belfast Telegraph reported. After he went missing, his family hired a private investigator, according to the outlet.

The cause of death is not determined, according to a statement from the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, and officials are waiting on a full autopsy report.

Dozens of readers commented on the sheriff’s Facebook post announcing the identification of the remains.

According to Google Maps, the general location where the human remains were found is less than a mile from the apartment complex where Hargreaves lived.

Hargreaves’ brother told the BBC that the former rugby player’s disappearance was “strange” considering the shower in the apartment was still running and his door was unlocked when he vanished.

“We still do not know the cause of death or what actually happened,” Hargreaves’ brother said on Facebook. “Thanks to all those that have helped in the search. We would appreciate a little space and will keep you updated when we have any further information.”
