Former Senator Orrin Hatch wants equal pay for women's U.S. soccer team
Former United States Senator Orrin Hatch believes the U.S. women’s soccer team deserves to get paid just as much as the men.
In a statement Wednesday, Hatch asked the U.S. Soccer Federation and other policymakers to “end this two-tiered, gender-based structure that has unfairly discriminated against female athletes.”

The 85-year-old Hatch cited the 2002 Winter Olympics and Paralympics as inspiration for his stance. Hatch was the Senator of Utah when the state hosted the event.
The women’s team, which defeated Thailand 13-0 on Tuesday, has been fighting for equal pay for some time now. Members of the team signed a lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation in Match that alleged “institutionalized gender discrimination.”
After U.S. Soccer still pushed back against the notion, the women’s team said they looked forward to the suit going to trial.
