Former SJ-R basketball player of the year has career game for Southern Illinois women

MACOMB — Raymond's Abby Brockmeyer finished with 34 points and 16 rebounds to set career highs in both categories to lead the Southern Illinois women's basketball team to a 74-66 win over Eastern Illinois on Friday in the Compass Challenge.

Brockmeyer was The State Journal-Register's small-school girls basketball player of the year in 2017. Brockmeyer played for Litchfield in a co-op between the Purple Panthers and her alma mater, Raymond Lincolnwood.

Her 34 points was the highest in the Salukis' program in nine years.

"I owe it all to my teammates; they find me when I'm open," Brockmeyer said. "We knew coming in that we were low on posts and that we were going to get a lot of minutes, and I think we dominated the post."

It was Brockmeyer's second double-double this season.
