JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Marking the official end of the football season, the Salvation Army’s “Souper Bowl for the Hungry” event took place this morning in Johnson City. In years past the event included past speakers such as Archie Manning, Bart Starr, Gayle Sayers, and Ron Jaworski, just to name a few.

This year’s speaker was former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher from 1994 to 2010.

Coach Fisher led the Titans to an appearance in Super Bowl 34 after the 1999 season, where the team came up one yard short of scoring the winning touchdown as time expired, falling to the St. Louis Rams by a score of 23-16. Now that the Titans are in a coaching transition, Fisher advises the new staff to reach out further than the Nashville area.

“We actually looked at it as it’s used facilities at times because we had, they were talking about eventually, you know, having training camp there for our first couple of years until we got settled. So finishes a special place. And again all the adjoining states, I mean football in the South is unique and the tradition is rich, and over time you want to carry on the tradition. They’ve got to reach out to the little ones.”

Coach Fisher went on to say he was approached by ETSU officials about their head coaching job several years ago but had to decline because of health issues.
