Oct. 5—Former UNH hockey captain Josh Ciocco, who spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Merrimack College, has died.

Merrimack College announced his death Tuesday. No time of death or cause was given.

Ciocco, 38, a winger from Atco, N.J., played four years for the Wildcats, and was captain in 2006-07, his senior season. He scored 22 goals and notched 38 assists in his college career. The Wildcats made the NCAA tournament all four of Ciocco's years

He played two seasons in the ECHL before joining the University of Alaska-Anchorage as an assistant coach. He was there for three years, then moved to Brown as an assistant for two years before joining Merrimack.

In 2017, the Union Leader reported that Ciocco was diagnosed with compartmental syndrome, which impedes the flow of blood to affected tissues. At that time he was admitted to a Rhode Island hospital after portions of muscle in his leg died, which caused toxins to enter his bloodstream and required dialysis.
