Former Wausau woman gets year in jail for accidental suffocation death of 5-month-old son

WAUSAU − A 26-year-old former Wausau woman was sentenced Friday to one year in jail for the death of her 5-month-old son.

Shailey M. Huron, whose current address is listed as Alba, Texas, pleaded no contest Oct. 24 to neglecting a child resulting in death. Marathon County Circuit Judge Greg Strasser ordered Huron to serve 10 years on probation for the infant's death during her sentencing Friday. As a condition of the probation, she has to serve one year in jail, undergo an assessment and any counseling deemed necessary, and comply with all the requirements of Child Protective Services.

According to the criminal complaint, officers and emergency medical personnel responded to a report of an infant not breathing at 6 a.m. March 30, 2020, in a home in the 100 block of North Fourth Avenue in Wausau. When officers arrived, a man was performing CPR on an infant. First responders took over and saw there was blood coming from the boy's nose, according to the complaint.

An 18-year-old man who was with Huron told police the baby was in bed with him and Huron, according to the complaint. The man said he was by the wall, Huron was in the middle and the baby was on the side of the bed by the bassinet. The man said he later moved the baby to the bassinet when Huron woke up to go to the bathroom. He said the baby looked like he was sleeping when he moved him, according to the complaint.

When Huron returned from the bathroom, she went to change the baby and realized something was wrong, according to the complaint. She told an officer the baby "felt weird" when she picked him up.

At first, Huron told police the baby was in the bed with her and the man only for a short time and then she put him in the bassinet without a blanket, according to the complaint. A detective overheard a conversation between Huron and the man during which the man said the baby was next to them the whole time.

Huron later told detectives her son was in bed with her all night, and she remembered the man put the baby in the bassinet when she got up to use the bathroom, according to the complaint. Huron said the baby was in the middle of the bed and she was on the side closest to the bassinet, according to the complaint.

A medical examiner determined the baby died from accidental suffocation associated with an unsafe sleep environment, according to Wausau Police.

Detectives found out the baby's pediatrician and other medical professionals previously warned Huron not to sleep in the same bed with the infant, according to the complaint. They also gave her educational material on safe sleeping habits.
