A former Webberville clerk treasurer has been charged with embezzling $50,000 to $100,000 after a seven-month investigation by the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Jaymee Hord of Owosso, 52, was charged Friday with the 15-year felony following the investigation, which included a forensic audit by an outside firm, according to a Friday press release from the sheriff’s office.

Hord was arraigned in 55th District Court and given a personal recognizance bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Nov. 1.

Irregularities were discovered during a routine financial audit in March 2022. Webberville’s president notified the village’s attorney, who notified the sheriff’s office. A criminal investigation began and the results were sent to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review earlier this month, according to the release.

In 2020, the Lansing State Journal reported that the Michigan Department of Treasury was withholding $544,000 in Michigan Transportation Fund money and $97,000 in state revenue sharing after the village repeatedly failed to file required financial documents.

Hord, who had been clerk treasurer since February 2014, said at the time village officials had already started implementing policies to correct state-identified issues.

The village hired two staffers in 2018 to work with Hord. Jessica Kuch and Tammy Hamill have been deputy clerk treasurers since, according to the village's website.

Webberville hired certified public accounting and business advisory firm Plante Moran at the end of January 2020 to help “catch up” the audit reporting, to investigate and verify numbers, and report findings to the state, according to its website.
