Former WGAL anchor Janelle Stelson is running for Congress, hoping to unseat Scott Perry

Former WGAL news anchor Janelle Stelson has announced that she is running for U.S. Congress in hopes of unseating incumbent Republican Scott Perry.

Stelson resigned from the television station last month as news reports swirled that she might launch a run for Congress.

She released a video Tuesday, announcing her bid for office as a Democratic candidate for the 10th Congressional District.

"I've covered politics for decades, doing the job of my dreams as anchor of the most watched newscast," she says in the video. "But I cannot stand by and watch Congressman Perry continue to sow chaos, preach extremism, and spout conspiracy theories.

"So I am running for Congress," she said.

Stelson will be running against numerous candidates in the primary.

Mike O'Brien, a retired lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Marine Corps, formally announced his bid earlier this month.

Shamaine Daniels, an immigration attorney and Harrisburg City Councilwoman, is planning a second campaign. Rick Coplen, an Army combat veteran and teacher of advanced studies at the U.S. Army War College and Elizabethtown College, announced his plans over the summer to run for the seat for a second time.

And Bob Forbes, retired Army Sergeant First Class and a substitute teacher in the Harrisburg School District, announced on Facebook that he, too, will run for the office.

Stelson lives in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, PennLive has reported. That is in the 11th Congressional District.

To run for Congress, candidates must be at least 25 years old, live within the state and have been a U.S. Citizen for seven years, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State.
