The former 'yellow vest' heading France's protests

Protests in France against a COVID-19 health pass are being re-invigorated by a familiar face.

Jerome Rodrigues, was a major figure in the Yellow Vests protests two years ago, which first sought to challenge President Emmanuel Macron's rule before fizzling out.

His bearded profile is well known in the Yellow Vest protests, and now he is on a mission to try and get the movement back together.

They are taking aim at the government's newly proposed COVID-19 rules which some say are an attack on their liberty.

Macron's administration has submitted legislation to parliament which will stop people entering restaurants and bars without a "health pass", showing they are vaccinated, have had a recent negative test, or have immunity from COVID-19.

Rodrigues, who lost an eye when he was hit with a baton round at a protest two years ago, is leading the movement with gusto:

"This movement isn't anti-vaccine at all. This movement is against the health pass. We just want to win back the liberties that we lost, and there are quite a few of them, and protect those that we have left."

Last weekend, police estimated that 100,000 people joined protests against the government's measures.

Some of those joined wearing custom-made Yellow Vests.

On the other hand, Macron's allies say protests should not obscure what they say is a silent majority who support the measures.

Laetitia Avia, a member of parliament with Macron's party explains:

"It is not about saying: 'There [are] X% of people in the streets, so we will give up measures that are good for the French people's health."

Yellow Vests have called to protest again over the weekend.
