Formula One will race in Japan until 2029 after agreeing on a five-year extension with the driver and fan favourite Suzuka Circuit, F1 said on Friday.

In 2024, the Japanese Grand Prix will move to a new slot in April – between races in Australia and China – as part of F1’s efforts to rationalize its calendar, reducing the distance that freight travels around the world.

Suzuka hosted its first F1 race in 1987 and has since become a traditional stop during the season. This year, the Japanese GP will take place there on April 7.

"Suzuka is a special circuit and part of the fabric of the sport, so I am delighted that F1 will continue to race there until at least 2029," F1 president Stefano Domenicali said.
