Fort Bragg brigade to deploy to Europe this summer

FORT BRAGG — A Fort Bragg brigade will deploy to Europe this summer, the Army announced last month.

The 525th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade, which is based at Fort Bragg under the 18th Airborne Corps, will replace the Fort Hood, Texas-based, 504th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade as part of a “regular rotation,” the news release stated.

The deployment is “to support the United States’ commitment to NATO allies and partners in Europe,” according to the release.

Fort Bragg soldiers were among the first units to deploy to Europe following the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Polish soldiers assigned and U.S. paratroopers assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division wait to load a CH-47 Chinook helicopter during a multi-national training event Feb. 25, 2022, in Nowa Deba, Poland. The 525th Military Intelligence Brigade will be the latest Fort Bragg unit to deploy to Europe to support NATO amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Recent rotations

More than 4,700 soldiers deployed to Poland for more than five months in February 2022, before being replaced by soldiers with the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, from Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Also in February 2022, about 300 soldiers with the 18th Airborne Corps deployed to Germany for about nine months to bolster capabilities inside NATO’s eastern flank.

In June, President Joe Biden announced that a permanent headquarters for the Army’s V Corps would be established in Poland to “strengthen NATO interoperability across the entire eastern flank.”

The announcement followed the April 5, 2022, House Armed Services Committee meeting testimony of Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said he supported creating permanent bases in Europe for rotational troops.

Biden also announced in June that the U.S. would send fighter jet squadrons to the United Kingdom, an air defense artillery brigade headquarters to Germany, two more naval destroyers to Spain, a rotational brigade combat team to Romania and an increase of rotational deployments in the Baltic region.
