Fort Bragg soldier killed on interstate in Duplin County on Sunday

Editor's note: This is an updated version of the original story. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command is double-checking the location of the incident. 

A soldier assigned to the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg died Sunday after being struck by a vehicle on an interstate in Duplin County.

According to a statement from U.S. Army Special Operations Command, the incident happened as the soldier, who needed medical attention while on a training exercise, was being taken to the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune because beds were limited at Womack Army Medical Center.

"While en route to Camp Lejeune, the soldier exited the vehicle and was struck by oncoming traffic," the statement said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The soldier's name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
