Fort Collins to host free mulch, household hazard waste disposable events: What to know

Fort Collins residents can take advantage of picking up free wood mulch and getting rid of hazardous household waste at two city events on Saturday, May 20.

Windsor is also hosting its spring cleanup event this weekend on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13.

Fort Collins offers free mulch day Saturday, May 20

  • When: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20

  • Where: City facilities at 1380 Hoffman Mill Road, northeast corner of Riverside Avenue and Lemay Avenue

  • What to know: A front-end loader will load pickups or trailers. Make sure you can cover your load. This event is not open to commercial businesses. This event was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 13, but was postponed due to the weather.

  • Another option: If you can't make it May 20, you can visit the Timberline Recycling Center or Gardens on Spring Creek throughout the year for free mulch. Learn more at fcgov.com/forestry or by calling 970-221-6660.

Fort Collins offers household hazardous waste day May 20

  • When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20

  • Where: City of Fort Collins Streets Facility, 625 Ninth St.

  • Accepted items: Household batteries, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, cleaners and bleaches, fluorescent light bulbs, pool and hot tub chemicals, vitamins and supplements, painting products (stain, solvent, spray paint), automotive products (virtually all fluids), personal care products (shampoo, lotion, nail polish remover) and mercury-containing items (thermostats, button-shaped batteries)

  • Not accepted: Tires, e-waste, asbestos, explosives, pharmaceuticals, bio-waste (needles, bandages) and commercial and industrial waste

  • How to transport: Store items upright in boxes or tubs, not loose bags; keep similar items together (do not stack); seal containers tightly and ensure they are not leaking; separate acids and oxidizer and keep items away from children and pets.

  • Another option: The city's Timberline Recycling Center (TRC) Hard-to-Recycle Yard and Larimer County's Household Hazardous Waste Facility accepts items such as antifreeze, household batteries, motor/cooking oil and paint for free year-round.

Windsor hosts spring cleanup event May 12-13

  • When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12-13

  • Where: Public Services facility, 922 N. 15th St.

  • What you need: An entry voucher can be found on the back page of the spring Windsor Matters magazine mailed to all Windsor residents. If the voucher is misplaced, residents can bring valid identification such as a driver’s license or a copy of a previous utility bill to Windsor Town Hall, 301 Walnut St., the Public Services facility, or the Community Recreation Center, 250 11th St., during regular business hours or day-of at the event for a replacement. Residents need to unload their own items.

  • Accepted items: General household trash; yard and garden waste, branches, tree limbs up to 4 inches in diameter and grass clippings; scrap metal; vehicle tires without rims; stoves; appliances such as stoves, ovens, washers, dryers, dishwashers and microwaves; grills; bicycles; and electronics such as laptops, computers, keyboards, cellphones, tablets, servers, flat screen televisions and monitors, small printers and copiers.

  • Not accepted: General household mixed recycling (paper, cardboard etc.), hazardous waste, propane tanks, gas cylinders, refrigerators or other appliances containing freon, construction debris (dirt, cement, pavers), wood pallets, vehicles, lightbulbs, CRT televisions, nonrecyclable glass (cut glass, mirrors, porcelain, ceramics, window glass) and animal carcasses.
