Fort Collins weather live updates: City under winter storm warning, school events canceled

Fort Collins and the surrounding area was placed under a winter storm warning by the National Weather Service on Thursday morning due to expected significant snow and wind.

The warning is in effect from 8:30 a.m. Thursday until 9 a.m. Friday with 5 to 10 inches of snow and wind gusting to 35 mph forecast. Previously, the area was under a winter weather advisory.

Front Range Community College cancels in-person classes

All in-person classes scheduled for 4 p.m. or later Thursday at Front Range Community College campuses are canceled.

Remote classes will continue as normal, and in-person classes may opt to meet remotely, so "students should check their D2L course sites or contact their teachers for additional guidance or updates," the school said in an emailed announcement.

Poudre School District cancels after-school activities

Poudre School District is canceling after-school activities, programs, events and athletics Thursday due to the winter storm warning and "expected significant snow and wind."

Though AlphaBest's after-school program will stay open, you are asked to pick up your student(s) as soon as possible, according to the district's announcement.

Schools will get out at their regular times, but the district advised that bus routes could be delayed due to weather conditions. You can track your child's bus through the Here Comes the Bus app, available through the Apple iTunes Store or Google Play. Use PSD school code 75840 when creating your account if you don't have one already.

Thompson cancels after-school activities

Thompson School District in Loveland is cancelling all after-school activities on Thursday, including athletic practices, after-school care in district buildings and any events at school facilities.

But schools are otherwise operating on their usual start and release times.

Fort Collins on accident alert

Fort Collins is on accident alert until midnight, according to Fort Collins Police Services.

This means if you are in involved in a non-injury, non-alcohol/drug related crash, exchange information and report online at fcgov.com/police-report.

House of worship security presentation cancelled due to snow

The security presentation for houses of worship planned in Fort Collins for Thursday night has been cancelled due to snow. All those who have RSVP'd for the event will be notified via email when a new date has been selected.

What to know about the winter storm warning

The winter storm warning area includes a thin band from the Wyoming border to Fort Collins, Boulder, Golden and west of Denver, including the foothills.

The weather service said there will be a snow lull near midday before snow intensifies later this afternoon and evening.

Travel is expected to be difficult all day Thursday and into Friday morning.

Travel is discouraged. If you must travel, the weather service recommends packing a flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
