The signs designating Fort Eisenhower at the former Fort Gordon have gone up, but the public will not be able to see them yet.

A spokesperson for the Fort confirmed Monday that the signs were installed Friday, after the old Fort Gordon signs had been removed over a month ago.

The official renaming was announced a year ago, when Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III issued a memo accepting the recommendations of a congressionally authorized commission to rename U.S. Military assets honoring Confederate soldiers. The ceremony itself will be held on Oct. 27.

The name Fort Eisenhower was put forward by the commission over a year ago as one of nine military installations to be renamed. Also on the list was the former Fort Benning, which has since been renamed to Fort Moore, after married couple Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and Julia Moore.
