Fort Gordon issues nearly 100 tickets in statewide speeding initiative

Fort Gordon participated in Operation Southern Slowdown last week, holding nearly 100 drivers accountable for speeding on the instillation.

The annual campaign, which ran July 17-23, cracks down on speeding by increasing law enforcement presence on the roads.

The safety campaign, which Fort Gordon has participated in for the last seven years, concentrates on curbing speeding and aggressive driving behaviors, according to a Facebook post from the instillation.

Fort Gordon's law enforcement team reported it issued 96 speeding tickets throughout the week, resulting in three six-month driving privilege suspensions for super speeders. It also reported one arrest for driving with a suspended license, one ticket for a driver not having vehicle insurance and one person found to be in possession of marijuana.

Law enforcement said it typically issues about 10 tickets per week and added an additional 33 overtime manhours to focus on the week-long initiative.

"Fort Gordon law enforcement will continue the proactive enforcement of safe driving practices long after the completion of Operation Southern Slow Down," the instillation wrote in a statement. "Through the continued support of the Fort Gordon Leadership and the law enforcement community, both on and off post, we will continue to make Fort Gordon a safe place for those who live and work here."
