Fort Madison girls wrestling team makes history in second-place finish at home

The Fort Madison High School girls wrestling team had an historic day Monday, finishing second in the first Fort Madison Girls Wrestling Invitational at the Hound Dome.

Winning titles for the Bloodhounds were Hailey Kemper at 100 pounds, Mara Smith at 130, Mylah Blanchard at 135B and Athena Carson at 235.

Marquel Warner (145) and Sadie Brandon (170) each placed second, while Rylee Steffensmeier (120), Alexa Walz (135A), Marie Young (135B) and Tatum Peters (155) each finished third.

Keokuk's Jalyiah Gardner won the championship at 155.

Notre Dame-West Burlington's Macey Johnson placed second at 235, while Ella Spiker was fifth at 155.

BOYS BASKETBALL

BURLINGTON 83, DAVENPORT NORTH 74: Seniors Merquiche Lewis, Jr. and JJ Martin combined to score 59 points and led the Grayhounds to a road victory over the Wildcats in the season opener at Davenport.

Lewis poured in a game-high 35 points, while Martin finished with 24 points.

Also for the Grayhounds, Nehemiah Lewis scored eight points, Bryson Tate had five points, Mateo Rascon and Shaye Stronger each scored four points and Christos Kantzavelos scored three points.

NOTRE DAME 60, ALBIA 42: Carsen Jones led a balanced attack with 20 points and Liam Delaney tossed in 19 points to lead the Nikes to a road win over the Blue Demons at Albia in the season opener.

Gedi Boal added 10 points for the Nikes, while Ethan Todd finished with nine points.

WACO 66, HOLY TRINITY 52: Hunter Hughes scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Warriors to a road win over the Crusaders at Shottenkirk Gymnasium in Fort Madison.

Colton Leichty and Isaac Oswald each scored nine points for the Warriors, while Cody Graber added eight points.

Conner Gehling led the Crusaders with 22 points, while Luke Hellige scored 13 points.

CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON 58, MOUNT PLEASANT 33: The Panthers suffered a road loss in the season opener at Cedar Rapids.

Payton Hagans led the Panthers with nine points, while Nate Stroud and Aaiden Ashton each scored six points.

KEOTA 68, LOUISA-MUSCATINE 58: Ty Northup scored 23 points and Xander Bieri added 16 points in the Falcons' road loss at Keota.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NOTRE DAME 56, ALBIA 34: Anna Engberg led a balanced attack with 13 points and Maddy Mosena added 12 points to lead the Nikes to a victory over the Lady Dees at Albia.

Lauren Krieger added 10 points for the Nikes, while Abby Korschgen had eight points, Gabby Deery had seven points and Taryn Stephens had six points.

FORT MADISON 58, CLARK COUNTY (MISSOURI) 33: Camille Kruse scored 22 points, dished out five assists, pilfered three steals and blocked two shots in the Bloodhounds' win at Kahoka, Missouri.

Also for the Bloodhounds, Irelynd Sargent scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists, Halle Menke grabbed seven rebounds and Molly Knipe and Taylor Johnson each scored six points.

COLUMBUS 43, NEW LONDON 28: Sara Vela scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Ariana Vergara scored 14 points and Frannie Sosa had seven rebounds in the Wildcats' road win at Charles Lorber Gymnasium in New London.

Natalie Burden led the Tigers with 15 points, while Mylee Miller added eight points.

WILTON 53, WAPELLO 26: Tatum Wolford scored 11 points and Jacie Hoeg added eight points in the Arrows road loss at Wilton.

LOUISA-MUSCATINE 43, KEOTA 37: Bailey Randall scored 14 points and McKenzie Kissell added 12 points to lead the Falcons to a win at Keota.

ILLINI WEST 53, WEST HANCOCK 38: Rylee Reed scored 13 points and Reagan Reed added nine points in the Chargers' win over the Titans.
