Fort Myers child, man die in drunken driving crash, troopers report; 3 injured

Florida Highway Patrol reports a drunken, unlicensed driver killed a Fort Myers man and a 3-year-old girl in a head-on collision Sunday night.

Another adult and two other children in the car sustained serious injuries in the North Fort Myers incident, a crash report indicates.

Troopers said as Pedro Eliseo Alvarez Alvarado, 22, of Fort Myers, was driving a Honda minivan west on Bayshore Road near Ixora Drive about 9:35 p.m. when he traveled over the paved median and hit a Hyundai sedan head-on, then crashed into a Toyota pickup.

The Hyundai's driver, a 28-year-old Fort Myers man and the toddler died. Also in the car, a 27-year-old woman, a 2-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, all of Fort Myers, were taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The Toyota driver, a 46-year-old North Fort Myers woman and her passenger, a 20-year-old North Fort Myers man, weren't injured, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Alvarez Alvarado remained in Lee County Jail on Monday morning. Bond information was unavailable. He faces charges of drunken driving causing death and driving without a license causing death.

The child and driver are among at least 112 people killed on Lee County roads in 2023.
