Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson fractures femur on shopping trip; could be out for a week
Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson is thanking his lucky stars that a spill he took Saturday did nothing more than break his leg.
"Considering what could have happened," the mayor said from his hospital bed on Sunday. "Initially, when I was in the emergency room, I heard someone say something about a shattered hip. I'm just a little sore."
Anderson, who became mayor almost two years ago, was at a grocery store on Saturday when he took the fall.
"I just hit a slippery spot," he said, and down he went. The result was a femur fracture that led to surgery and a rod inserted in the bone on Saturday.

"My doctor said it was textbook surgery," he said, "... and a textbook recovery."
He said he was not fitted for a cast but does have a walker and crutches might be in his short-term future as well. Anderson was discharged to home later Sunday.
"The orthopedic (doctor) came in and said 'oh, you just broke your femur. You're in good shape," he said. "The therapist came in and it was 'toe-touch.' The (physician assistant) showed up and said 'no, the doctor said the only limitations he's got is his pain'."
Anderson said his doctor did tell him not to push things too fast.
The mayor said he faces a six-to-eight-week recovery period but would likely only be out of the office maybe just this coming week.
"It couldn't be worse timing," he said, due to this being a busy time on his mayoral calendar.
