Fort Stewart spokesperson releases details of family's on-base deaths, IDs of parents

Officials have identified the two adults involved and released additional details about the deaths of four people living on Fort Stewart in Georgia.

Fort Stewart Spokesman Kevin Larson via email on Friday identified Staff Sgt. Meiziaha Cooper and her husband Desmond Cooper as the two adults who died. Larson also released the ages of their two children who also died: 4 and 9 years old.

The family was found dead in their on-base home on the afternoon of Nov. 15 following a welfare check made by Cooper's unit.

Larson said initial findings of the investigation indicate the incident was "domestic in nature." However, the cause of death and events leading up to the incident have not been released.

Cooper joined the Army in October 2012 and served as a culinary noncommissioned officer. Her awards included four Army Commendation Medals and six Army Achievement Medals.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Staff Sgt. Cooper's family, friends and teammates during this very difficult and tragic time,” said 3rd Infantry Division Deputy Commander of Operations Col. Jeremy S. Wilson. “Our community has been shaken by this unspeakable tragedy and out of respect to the family, we ask for privacy to grieve this loss."

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Fort Stewart law enforcement in partnership with the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division.

Fort Stewart is located a little more than 40 miles southwest of Savannah. Covering 280,000 acres, it's the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River.
