Fort Worth has a new luxury hotel where even the rich can’t check in. We got a tour.

Fort Worth just got a swanky new hotel, but no matter how much money you’re willing to spend, you won’t be able to stay there.

American Airlines opened its $250 million hospitality complex, Skyview 6, in January. At more than 550,000 square feet, the 600-room hotel is exclusive to American Airlines team members.

Pilots, flight attendants and other frontline workers will use the hotel when visiting American’s Fort Worth headquarters for training and business meetings. Crescent Real Estate Holdings, which is also behind luxury hotel projects in downtown Dallas and Fort Worth, led the development.

The complex was designed for airline employees to feel welcomed and valued, representatives for the company said.

The hotel, formerly home to the American Airlines Stewardess College, is decorated with odes to the past including a medallion that hung in the original building and aviation-inspired ceiling fans made from parts of American Airlines aircraft.

Holly Ragan, who led the project’s design and construction, said there are examples of modern art and traditional icons throughout. Ragan said the new facility is the culmination of a multi-year initiative to be the heart of campus.

“The ability to bring so many people from across the world together is pretty cool, because our flight attendants and our pilots especially, they’ve been working with us for 20 years on, and it’s neat to have a place where they can come together and connect,” Ragan said.

With nods to aviation along the way, each hotel floor is named after a travel destination. Rooms differ from traditional luxury hotels ever so slightly. Ottomans are decorated with an aircraft seat belt. Desks have tack boards to hang aircraft maps and diagrams. Framed paper airlines and portraits of aircraft hang above the beds.

Each room is equipped with black-out curtains for pilots who have been working overnight and need to sleep during the day.

The hospitality complex has several dining options including a cafeteria, coffee and wine bar, grab-n-go market and late-night tavern where employees can gather for dinner and drinks. The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from pilot and flight attendant training.

A 73,500-square-foot fitness center includes group classes and an outdoor exercise pool, and a 10,000-square-foot ballroom is used for company gatherings.

Architects on the project were Gensler, HKS, Pelli Clarke & Partners and The Office of James Burnett. The general contractor was The Beck Group.
