Fort Worth school board to approve special election to fill vacant District 4 seat
The Fort Worth school district board is set to order a special election Tuesday to fill the seat left vacant by the death of trustee Daphne Brookins in November, according to the agenda for a Jan. 18 special meeting.
If approved, the special election would be held on May 7 to decide who will serve the remainder of Brookins’ District 4 term, which expires in 2025.
Brookins, a Texas Wesleyan University graduate, was elected to the district’s board in 2019, filling the seat vacated by T.A. Sims. She was elected to a full term in May 2021. In early November, she died after a brief illness.
District 4 includes parts of southeast Fort Worth and includes O. D. Wyatt High School.
Board candidates and voters must live within District 4, and candidates must have lived in the district for six months prior to the final filing day, which is on March 7 at 5 p.m.
The board will identify election day polling locations, as well as early voting hours and locations at a future meeting, according to the agenda.
Under state law, the board could also decide to fill the vacancy by appointing a member.
