Latvian president Edgars Rinkēvičs identified the construction of a fortified eastern border with Belarus and Russia as one of the country's top priorities, he told LTV TV, reported Delfi.

The eastern border requires the strengthening of military infrastructure, as the fence is intended to prevent hybrid threats and may not be sufficient to protect the country from more serious military threats.

112 kilometers of fencing were constructed in dry areas along the Latvia-Belarus border in 2023.

In 2024, the country plans to enhance the infrastructure along the fence and complete work on sections in state waters, where a 33.5-kilometer patrol zone will be established.

Deforestation has already begun in these areas, allowing for accelerated fence construction. The fencing in these sections is expected to be completed by July of 2024.
