"Fortnite" has drafted basketball legend Michael Jordan -- in the form of Nike's iconic Jumpman logo -- to help promote its non-combat Creative mode.
Nike sneakers, basketballs, even skateboard decks are being dropped into "Fortnite" via a new Creative mode attraction.
Limited Time Modes are most commonly associated with the "Fortnite" Battle Royale mode, in which up to 100 players duke it out to be the last person or team standing.
Creative mode, however, leans more heavily on the "Fortnite" origins in "Minecraft," letting players think up and construct buildings, play areas, obstacle courses and even amateur film sets.
It's here that the latest Limited Time Mode (LTM) has been rolled out, the Downtown Drop LTM by Jordan, and as well as nods to Jumpman's basketball origins, it looks like it's leveraging mobile gaming's hit endless runner, "Subway Surfers."
Downtown Drop players race through a downhill course, switching lanes to avoid obstacles, leaping over vehicles and off jumps to collect coins and giant Air Jordan sneakers.
Like "Fortnite," "Subways Surfers" is a free-to-play game that invites players to spend in order to unlock extra costumes and cosmetics.
It has a social element through high score leaderboards and keeps players interested with regular course makeovers and an overarching world tour theme.
The Nike crossover makes for the second week running that "Fortnite" has scored a big mainstream tie-in, after action movie character John Wick was added on May 16.
A costume set called the Hang Time Bundle is also being made available for purchase in the free-to-play game.
Though "Fortnite" built its mobile, console and computer playerbase on through Battle Royale, its Creative mode was introduced in December 2018 and forms part of the 2019 Fortnite World Cup, whose qualification stage runs until June 16 -- Creative Trials wrap on June 6 -- with the World Cup Finals from July 26 to 28.
