'Fortunate that no one died:' Prince George man charged with driving motorcycle into cop

RICHMOND — A Prince George County man has been charged with hit-and-run after he allegedly struck a Richmond Police officer Tuesday on his motorcycle and fleeing the scene.

According to a police report, Jacob Terry McClung, 22, has been charged with felony hit-and-run, felony elude and reckless driving, as well as other traffic offenses. He was arrested without incident in Hopewell, police said.

Police allege McClung was one of several motorcyclists doing some "aggressive driving" shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Broad and Terminal streets. As police arrived on the scene and began directing traffic, one of the bikers allegedly hit an officer head-on with his motorcycle and drove away. The officer was taken to a Richmond hospital with a head injury, where he was treated and released.

McClung is being held in the Richmond Justice Center, police said.

In a statement, police chief Gerald Smith said it was "fortunate that no one died" in the incident.

“Joyriding and endangering the lives of others by reckless driving on the city streets of Richmond will not be tolerated," Smith said. "There are serious charges associated with this behavior and you will be charged appropriately.”
