Fountain Square's Thunderbird bar to close at the end of the year

Thunderbird, the Fountain Square craft cocktail bar, is closing shop at the end of the year.

After about nine years in business, Thunderbird, 1127 Shelby St., will close on New Year's Eve, according to an announcement on its Facebook page.

“Our plan was to ride things out until we hit year ten and decide if we wanted to continue. However, circumstances have allowed us to end things a bit sooner on our own terms,” it said.

Owner-operator Joshua Gonzales lost his heart for the business, he said in the post.

“Not only has the city changed but so have we. I got sober, I got healthy and I got burnt out. The truth is I’ve lost my love for this industry,” he said. “I’ve not set foot in a bar that wasn’t one of my own in at least three years. I have little interest left in cocktails or the food scene. It doesn’t inspire me as it once did. I’ve moved away from it and my commitment to running a bar has waned.”

Other partners are Ed Rudisell and Jon Altman.

The closure follows the demise of his Jailbird at 4022 S. Shelby St. back in June after three years of operation.

Jailbird lacked enough consistent weekend business to continue operation, according to an Instagram post.

Several shows are planned through the end of the year at Thunderbird, the post said.
