Four dead after head-on collision on South Carolina highway, troopers say

Four people are dead after a car hit another head-on in South Carolina, officials said.

The S.C. Highway Patrol said a Lincoln sedan was going west on a road when it traveled into the eastbound lane. The car then ran head on into an eastbound Honda Accord, according to state troopers.

Officials said the crash happened at about 9:40 a.m. Jan. 25. It was reported near Scuffletown Road and S.C. Highway 418, roughly 20 miles southeast of Greenville.

Three people — including the Lincoln passenger and two people in the Honda — died at the scene, officials said in a news release. The Laurens County Coroner’s Office told WYFF those people were identified as:

  • Crystal Swann, 79, of Fountain Inn

  • Karen Lockamy, 76, of Fountain Inn

  • Evan McNeely, 18, of Greenville

A fourth person — the Lincoln driver — was flown to a hospital and later died. He was identified in news reports as Kevin Marin, a 20-year-old from Greer.

Dennis Altman lives in the area of the collision and told WSPA there have been several crashes over the years.

“I’ve seen a lot of stuff back here that’s bad, motorcycle wrecks and all this and that,” Altman said, according to the TV station. “But to see this, that’s unreal.”

As of Jan. 25, state troopers continued to investigate the crash, and the coroner’s office said it was trying to determine the causes of death, WHNS reported.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for information on Jan. 26.
