Four dead in traffic crashes; victims from Mays Landing, Middlesex, Monroeville, Bridgeton

FRANKLIN TWP. - A Monroeville man died when his pickup truck hit a tree off Delsea Drive, police say.

Walter Green IV, 47, struck a utility pole off the northbound highway near Coles Mill Road around 10:40 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, according to Franklin police.

Green was one of at least three motorists to die in single-vehicle accidents in South Jersey in recent days. A pedestrian also was fatally struck on an area highway.

According to police:

∎ In Hamilton, an SUV struck 32-year-old Jessica Lavin while the Mays Landing woman was in the roadway of Route 50 near Spruce Street. The accident happened around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15.

The driver, a 65-year-old Egg Harbor City man, remained at the scene.

Lavin was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

∎ In Mount Laurel, a Middlesex County man died when his pickup truck hit the center median of the New Jersey Turnpike around 6:50 a.m. Aug. 11, State Police said.

John W Austin, 67, of South Plainfield lost control of his vehicle near milepost 39 on the northbound turnpike, police said.

∎ In Fairfield, a Bridgeton man died when a dump truck he was driving plunged into the Cohansey River on Aug. 10.

Matthew Jacobs Jr., 60, left the southbound lane of Bridgeton-Fairton Road around 11:30 p.m., according to New Jersey State Police.

The truck broke through a guardrail before entering the river.

A passenger in the truck was hospitalized with moderate injuries, police said.

The accidents remain under investigation.
