Four Exeter players earn All-State football honors in Class 5A

Dec. 30—In the preseason, Exeter coach Matt Bauer said the offensive and defensive lines would dictate how far his football team would go in 2022.

Following a 12-1 season, four Eagles, including three lineman, were voted to the Pennsylvania Football Writers' Class 5A All-State team that was released Friday.

Tackle Anthony Caccese and guard Lucas Palange were selected on the offensive line, while Kyle Lash earned a spot on the defensive line.

Exeter tight end/wide receiver Joey Schlaffer, voted as an athlete on offense, was selected for the second straight season. He made it as a tight end last year.

Caccese, a 6-7, 280-pound senior, and Lucas Palange, a 6-1, 236-pound senior, helped the Eagles average 229.8 rushing yards, 359.5 total yards and 37 points per game on their way to the Lancaster-Lebanon Section 2 title.

Lash, a 6-0, 220-pound senior and the Berks Defensive Lineman of the Year, finished with 67 tackles, including 20 for loss and 4.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery.

Schlaffer, a 6-6, 215-pound senior who has signed to play at Penn State, made 39 catches for 888 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also ran for 264 yards and three TDs, including a 91-yard run, on 16 carries. In addition, he saw time at quarterback and completed 4-of-7 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown with one interception.

The Eagles, who lost in the District 3 Class 5A title game to Cocalico, tied Roman Catholic for the most players on the team with four.

Quarterback Ryan Palmieri of Pine-Richland was voted Player of the Year. Pine-Richland's Jon LeDonne was voted Coach of the Year. His team beat Imhotep Charter 28-14 in the PIAA Class 5A final.
